Definition: Blepharitis is a common condition that causes inflammation of the eyelids. Sometimes referred to as granulated eyelids, blepharitis often produces flaky debris and particles at the base of the eyelashes. Blepharitis is an uncomfortable condition that usually causing itchy eyelids, but doesn't permanently damage eyesight.
Most cases of blepharitis are caused by poor eyelid hygiene. Other causes include oily eyelid glands, allergic reactions, bacterial infections, or lice on the eyelashes. Treating blepharitis usually involves regular cleaning of the eyelids and eyelashes. In addition to hygiene, some doctors may prescribe topical or systemic antibiotics or other medications to help control the condition.
