Dry Eyes and Menopause

Dry Eye SyndromeI see a lot of patients with dry eye syndrome, many of them women. Hormonal fluctuations during menopause sometimes change the quantity and quality of the tears you make. If tear production becomes low, and if the tears you make are abnormal, the surface of your eyes will no longer be properly nourished and protected. This may lead to the symptoms of dry eye syndrome.

Normal aging, certain medications, medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome and chemical burns are also possible causes of dry eye syndrome. Although there is no cure, your eye doctor can discuss which treatment options may work best for you.
