Question: Can Glaucoma Be Prevented?

Glaucoma runs in my family. Is there something I can do to prevent myself from developing glaucoma?

Answer: Glaucoma cannot be prevented, but blindness from glaucoma can usually be prevented with early detection and proper treatment. There are several risk factors for developing glaucoma, although you can have glaucoma even if you don't have any of the risk factors. If you are at risk, your best defense is an annual dilated eye examination. A comprehensive eye examination done on dilated pupils, along with certain tests, is the only way to diagnose glaucoma.
