Definition: A disease that can occur throughout the body but mostly affects the lungs. In sarcoidosis, inflammation produces lumps of cells (granulomas) in the tissues of the body. Granulomas can grow and clump together, affecting how an organ functions.
Sarcoidosis may affect the eyes. Common symptoms of sarcoidosis in the eyes include: burning, itching, pain, dryness, tearing, red eyes, blurred vision, sensitivity to light and small, pale yellow bumps on the eye. A condition called uveitis can result in many of these symptoms. Rarely, blindness can occur if uveitis is not treated.
