Definition: A malignant tumor (cancer) of the retina that generally affects children under the age of 6. It is a rare form of cancer that can affect one or both eyes. A whiteness in the pupil may be visible, usually alerting the parent or pediatrician to possible diagnosis. The eyes may also appear to be crossed.

Blindness can occur in the affected eye. The tumor can spread to the eye socket, and to the brain, through the optic nerve. If left untreated, retinoblastoma can be fatal.
