Definition: Appearance of redness on the surface of the eye caused by large, dilated blood vessels. There are several possible causes of red eye, including allergies, infections, dry eye syndrome and injuries. If eye redness lasts longer than a couple of days, it is important for an eye doctor to determine the underlying cause. Treatment of red eye depends on the cause.
