Latisse

Updated April 02, 2009

Definition: An FDA-approved prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to increase eyelash growth, making them longer, thicker and darker. Latisse is a once-a-day treatment applied to the base of the upper eyelashes. Results are seen gradually, usually starting at 4 weeks with full results after 16 weeks of continued use.

The active ingredient in Latisse is bimatoprost, which is also the active ingredient in the glaucoma drug Lumigan. Research suggests that the growth of eyelashes occurs by increasing the number of eyelash hairs during the eyelash growth phase. Lashes can grow longer, thicker, and darker because bimatoprost can also prolong the growth phase.
