Definition: A lens implanted in to the eye, usually replacing the natural crystalline lens, due to the cloudiness of a cataract. Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are sometimes implanted as a form of refractive surgery to change the eye's optical power.

Most intraocular lenses inserted today are monofocal lenses matched to distance vision. Multifocal lenses, however, are available, providing multiple-focused vision at far and reading distance. Adaptive IOLs provide limited visual accommodation.
