Definition: Endophthalmitis is an infection from bacteria or other organisms that develops inside the eye. Endophthalmitis is considered a severe complication following cataract surgery but can also occur after a penetrating injury or trauma to the eye.
Endophthalmitis can cause pain, redness and severe inflammation inside the eye. The condition is treated aggressively with antibiotics, which are injected directly into the eye. If not treated successfully, surgery is sometimes required. Permanent eye damage and vision loss can occur if left untreated.
