Definition: An erosion or open sore in the outer layer of the cornea. It usually involves the top layer of the cornea (epithelium), but can also disrupt the next layer (stroma).

Ulcers are generally categorized as sterile (no infectious organism present) or infectious. This distinction must be made in order for the proper treatment to be prescribed.

Corneal ulcers require quick treatment by an eye doctor. If left untreated, some corneal ulcers are serious enough to cause vision loss or even blindness. Common symptoms include pain, redness and light sensitivity.
