Blocked tear duct

A.D.A.M.
Definition: A partial or complete blockage in the tear duct system. The tear duct system is responsible for carrying tears away from the eye's surface, into the nose. If a tear duct is blocked, tears will build up in the eyes and stream down the face.

Tear ducts may not be completely developed in newborns, resulting in blockages that are easily treated. However, most blocked ducts eventually open on their own during the first year of life. In adults, tear ducts may be damaged by injuries, infections or tumors.

Also Known As: Dacryostenosis; blocked nasolacrimal duct
