A cataract is simply a clouding of the eye's lens. Cataracts are painless but they can affect vision. Cataracts are very common in older people. Although we can't prevent them, there are things we can do to slow the development of cataracts. Here are the top four ways to delay cataracts.

1. Don't smoke.

Researchers suspect that smoking may lead to cataracts.

2. Limit sun exposure.

Sun exposure tends to speed the development of cataracts. Wearing sunglasses and a hat with a brim to block ultraviolet sunlight may help to delay cataracts.

3. Eat lots of green, leafy vegetables.

Researchers believe good nutrition can help reduce the risk of age-related cataracts. They recommend eating green leafy vegetables, fruit, and other foods with antioxidants.

4. Control diabetes.

Some studies suggest people with diabetes are at risk for developing a cataract. Keep blood sugar at appropriate levels.
