Definition: The tough, usually white, outer layer of the eyeball. In children, the sclera may appear slightly blue, as it is thinner and shows some of the underlying pigment. In older people, fat deposits on the sclera can make it appear slightly yellow.

The sclera maintains the shape of the eye globe. It offers resistance to both internal and external forces, and serves as an attachment for many of the eye muscles.

Also Known As: White of the eye
