Definition: Either of the second pair of cranial nerves that carries electrical signals from the retina to the brain. Damage to the optic nerve typically causes permanent and severe loss of vision, as well as an abnormal pupillary reflex. The extent of vision loss depends on which parts of the optic nerve were damaged.
