Answer: Astigmatism is a common vision problem that causes objects to appear distorted and blurry, often affecting both distance and near vision. The problem is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. Astigmatism can usually be corrected with contact lenses, eyeglasses or refractive surgery.
Contact lenses that correct astigmatism are called toric contact lenses. Although small amounts of astigmatism may be corrected with soft toric lenses, people with large amount of astigmatism have greater success with hard toric lenses, generally referred to as rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses.
