Current glaucoma care and treatment plans are a cost-effective way to slow or prevent vision loss, according to a new study by researchers at RTI International, Duke University, Harvard University and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, and should be continued. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases caused by damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma has been nicknamed the "sneak thief of sight" because it often goes undetected and causes irreversible damage to the eye.
The study found that routine patient assessment for glaucoma during scheduled visits to an eye care provider followed by the treatment of patients with detectable symptoms of glaucoma was highly cost-effective.
