Contacts Don't Cause Nearsightedness in Kids, Study Shows
Saturday November 15, 2008
A new study shows that wearing soft contact lenses does not accelerate the development of nearsightedness in children, a myth known as "myopic creep." The three-year study, appearing in the November issue of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, tracked the myopic progression of 484 children ages 8-11 randomly assigned to wear glasses or contact lenses. The study found that there is no difference between the two forms of vision correction for the treatment of nearsightedness, a vision problem experienced by approximately one-third of the population.
